Yoga Sutras 1.13
Patanjali, explained by Swami Vivekananda
तत्र स्थितौ यत्नोऽभ्यासः ॥
tatra sthitau yatno'bhyāsaḥ
Continuous struggle to keep them (the Vrittis) perfectly restrained is practice.
In plain words: Practice means making a steady effort to keep the mind calm and free of thought-waves.
Swami Vivekananda explains
What is practice? The attempt to restrain the mind in Chitta form, to prevent its going out into waves.
