Prashna Upanishad 3.5

The Apâna (the down-breathing) in the organs of excretion and generation; the Prâna himself dwells in eye and ear, passing through mouth and nose. In the middle is the Samâna (the on-breathing); it carries what has been sacrificed as food equally (over the body), and the seven lights proceed from it.

In plain words: The teacher names some of the breaths and where they work. Apana, the downward breath, works in the organs of waste and of making children. The main Prana lives in the eyes and ears and moves through the mouth and nose. Samana, the middle breath, spreads food evenly through the body, and the seven openings of the head, which let us sense the world, get their power from it.
