Vidura Niti 4.23

Vidura speaking to King Dhritarashtra

They that desire salvation without having acquired the merit attainable by gifts, or that which is attainable by practising the ritual of the Vedas, do not sojourn through life, freed from anger and aversion. The happiness that may be derived from a judicious course of study, from a battle fought virtuously, from ascetic austerities performed rigidly, always increaseth at the end.

In plain words: Vidura says that people who want spiritual freedom without first doing good deeds like giving and performing their religious duties do not live free of anger and dislike. The happiness that comes from careful study, a fair fight, and strict self-discipline keeps growing in the end.
