Bhagavad Gita 10.29

Krishna speaking to Arjuna

अनन्तश्चास्मि नागानां वरुणो यादसामहम्। पितृ़णामर्यमा चास्मि यमः संयमतामहम् ॥

anantaśh chāsmi nāgānāṁ varuṇo yādasām aham pitṝīṇām aryamā chāsmi yamaḥ sanyamatām aham

And I am Ananta of Nâgas, Varuna of sea-dwellers I; and of ancestors Aryaman; Yama of governors am I.

In plain words: Krishna keeps naming the best of each group to show where God can be seen. Among serpents he is Ananta, the endless snake. Among sea beings he is Varuna, god of the waters. Among ancestors he is Aryaman, and among those who judge he is Yama, the lord of death.
