Stories from the Ramayana · Lesson 4 of 7
Hanuman's great leap
The monkeys learned that Sita was being held in Lanka, an island far across the ocean. But who could cross that much water?
Hanuman sat quietly. He had forgotten how strong he really was. As a child, he had been very mischievous with his powers, so sages had made him forget them until the right moment.
An old bear named Jambavan came to him and reminded him: you are the son of the Wind. You can do this. As Hanuman remembered who he was, he grew huge with courage.
He climbed a mountain, chanted Rama's name, and leaped across the whole ocean to Lanka.
There, in a garden, he found Sita, sad but strong. He gave her Rama's ring so she would know he was really sent by Rama, and he promised that Rama was coming.
Sometimes we forget how much strength we have, just like Hanuman. A good friend, teacher or grandparent who says "You can do this" can help us remember.
