Stories from the Ramayana · Lesson 3 of 7
Friends along the way
Rama and Lakshmana came home to an empty hut. Rama was heartbroken. The brothers set off searching for Sita, and on the way, they met helpers they never expected.
First they found Jatayu, the brave bird, who used his last strength to tell them Ravana had taken Sita south. Then they met an old woman named Shabari, who had waited her whole life to meet Rama. She welcomed him with simple berries. Many tellings say she tasted each one first to make sure it was sweet, and Rama happily ate them, because they were offered with love.
Then they met the monkey people, called the vanaras. Their prince, Sugriva, who had been driven from his home by his own brother, became Rama's friend. And Sugriva's minister became Rama's most loyal friend of all: Hanuman.
Hanuman was strong, wise and humble. From the moment he met Rama, he devoted his whole life to serving him.
Notice who helps Rama: a wounded bird, a poor old woman and a band of monkeys. Not kings or armies.
The lesson is that help often comes from people others overlook. Every being, no matter how small, can do something great.
