Yoga Sutras 4.12
Patanjali, explained by Swami Vivekananda
अतीतानागतं स्वरूपतोऽस्त्यध्वभेदाद्धर्माणाम् ॥
atītānāgataṃ svarūpato'styadhvabhedāddharmāṇām
The past and future exist in their own nature, qualities having different ways.
In plain words: The past and the future are real. They exist in a hidden, subtle form, because something can never come from nothing.
Swami Vivekananda explains
The idea is that existence never comes out of non-existence. The past and future, though not existing in a manifested form, yet exist in a fine form.
