Yoga Sutras 1.4

Patanjali, explained by Swami Vivekananda

वृत्तिसारूप्यमितरत्र ॥

vṛttisārūpyamitaratra

At other times (other than that of concentration) the seer is identified with the modifications.

In plain words: At other times, we mistake ourselves for our passing thoughts and feelings. For example, if someone blames me, I take on that hurt as if it were me, and I suffer.

Swami Vivekananda explains

For instance, someone blames me; this produces a modification, Vritti, in my mind, and I identify myself with it, and the result is misery.
