Chandogya Upanishad 7.14.1

'Hope (âsâ) is better than memory. Fired by hope does memory read the sacred hymns, perform sacrifices, desire sons and cattle, desire this world and the other. Meditate on hope.

In plain words: Hope is greater than memory. Hope is what moves memory to act. Because of hope, people study holy songs, do rituals, and wish for children, wealth, this world and the next. So meditate on hope.
