Let a man meditate on the fivefold Sâman as rain. The hinkâra is wind (that brings the rain); the prastâva is, 'the cloud is come'; the udgîtha is, 'it rains;' the pratihâra, 'it flashes, it thunders;'
In plain words: A person should meditate on the five-part chant as a rainstorm. The first part is the wind before rain, then the cloud arriving, then the rain falling, then the lightning and thunder.
