Chandogya Upanishad 2.23.2

Austerity the second, and to dwell as a Brahmakârin in the house of a tutor, always mortifying the body in the house of a tutor, is the third. All these obtain the worlds of the blessed; but the Brahmasamstha alone (he who is firmly grounded in Brahman) obtains immortality.

In plain words: The second branch is self-discipline. The third is living as a student in a teacher's home and living strictly there. All of these lead to happy heavenly worlds, but only the person firmly rooted in Brahman, the ultimate reality, reaches a life beyond death.
