Chandogya Upanishad 2.12.1

The hinkâra is, he rubs (the fire-stick); the prastâva, smoke rises; the udgîtha, it burns; the pratihâra, there are glowing coals; the nidhana, it goes down; the nidhana, it is gone out. This is the Rathantara Sâman as interwoven in fire.

In plain words: The five parts of the chant are matched to the life of a fire. Rubbing the fire-stick is the opening, rising smoke is the introduction, burning flame is the main chant, glowing coals are the response, and the fire dying down and going out is the ending. This is the Rathantara chant found in fire.
