Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 1.4.2

He feared, and therefore any one who is lonely fears. He thought, 'As there is nothing but myself, why should I fear?' Thence his fear passed away. For what should he have feared? Verily fear arises from a second only.

In plain words: Being alone, he felt afraid, and that is why lonely people feel fear. Then he thought, "There is nothing here but me, so what is there to fear?" and his fear went away. Fear only comes when there is someone or something other than yourself.
