See, Lakshmaṇ, how the vulture fell
While for my sake he battled well.
And strove to free with onset bold
My Sítá from the giant’s hold.
Supreme amid the vulture kind
His ancient rule the bird resigned,
And conquered in the fruitless strife
Gave for my sake his noble life.
In plain words: Rama tells Lakshmana that Jatayu died fighting bravely for him, trying to rescue Sita from the demon Ravana. The king of the vultures gave up his life for Rama's sake, even though he lost the fight.
