Vidura Niti 8.9

Vidura speaking to King Dhritarashtra

The person cast into the funeral pyre is followed only by his own acts. Therefore, should men carefully and gradually earn the merit of righteousness. In the world above this, and also in that below this, there are regions of great gloom and darkness. Know, O king, that those are regions where the senses of men are exceedingly afflicted. Oh, let not any of those places be thine.

In plain words: Only a person's own deeds go with them after death, so everyone should patiently build up a life of good actions. Vidura warns the king about dark, painful places after death where people suffer, and begs him not to end up there.
