Bhagavad Gita 17.7

Krishna speaking to Arjuna

आहारस्त्वपि सर्वस्य त्रिविधो भवति प्रियः। यज्ञस्तपस्तथा दानं तेषां भेदमिमं श्रृणु ॥

āhāras tv api sarvasya tri-vidho bhavati priyaḥ yajñas tapas tathā dānaṁ teṣhāṁ bhedam imaṁ śhṛiṇu

The food also which is dear to each is threefold, as also sacrifice, austerity and almsgiving. Hear thou the distinction of these.

In plain words: Krishna says that the food people like comes in three kinds, matching the three qualities of nature: pure, passionate and dark. The same is true of worship, self-discipline and giving to others. He is about to explain each one.
