← Yoga through Understanding the Three Modes of Material Nature

Bhagavad Gita 14.5

Krishna speaking to Arjuna

सत्त्वं रजस्तम इति गुणाः प्रकृतिसंभवाः। निबध्नन्ति महाबाहो देहे देहिनमव्ययम् ॥

sattvaṁ rajas tama iti guṇāḥ prakṛiti-sambhavāḥ nibadhnanti mahā-bāho dehe dehinam avyayam

Harmony, Motion, Inertia, such are the qualities, Matter-born; they bind fast in the body, O great-armed one, the indestructible dweller in the body.

In plain words: Krishna names the three qualities that come from nature: goodness, passion, and dullness. These three tie the soul that never dies to the body.
