← Yoga through Understanding the Three Modes of Material Nature

Bhagavad Gita 14.17

Krishna speaking to Arjuna

सत्त्वात्सञ्जायते ज्ञानं रजसो लोभ एव च। प्रमादमोहौ तमसो भवतोऽज्ञानमेव च ॥

sattvāt sañjāyate jñānaṁ rajaso lobha eva cha pramāda-mohau tamaso bhavato ’jñānam eva cha

From Harmony wisdom is born, and also greed from Motion; heedlessness and delusion are of Inertia and also unwisdom.

In plain words: Krishna says each of the three qualities of nature gives its own results. Harmony (goodness) brings wisdom. Motion (restless passion) brings greed. Inertia (dullness) brings carelessness, confusion and ignorance.
